#77: The Giving Tree 3

As the boy falls asleep, the tree starts singing a lullaby, expressing her admiration of the boy but also expressing her awareness of the future, not as a prophesy, but as a simple observation of her feelings, her roots and the boy's nature. The opening piano part was written for Jon and Cassie's wedding and was intended to be a transitional section between the melody I was playing for the bride's maids and the theme for the bride, a song called Baby Blue that Jon wrote for Cassie when they first started dating. So as I started this song I thought I'd use the piano part I wrote and then the Baby Blue melody for the verse.  In the end I just didn't feel right using the song that had been such an important part of their wedding. It seemed funny somehow and I had such great memories of playing Baby Blue as Cassie walked down the aisle and I didn't want to take away from that.  So I ended up re-writing everything but there are still strong Baby Blue influences including the structure and some of the ideas in the lyrics, most notably the idea of holding someone else's heart in your hand, an image which I found to be quite powerful. Thanks to Ryan Fairhead for writing and playing the acoustic guitar part on this song. You can hear Jon's song Baby Blue on his blog www.melodyfm.ca

good night boy sweet dreams,
dream of the things you want to see,
good night boy sweet dreams,
imagine how your life's going to be.
you know I can't go far,
these roots don't let me walk free
and you've got a hold of my heart
be careful with it please,
you'll leave home so you can roam,
and when you find what you seek,
you'll come home to me.
good night boy sweet dreams,
Is there a place where we can pretend,
good night boy sweet dreams
our little games will never end
you know I can't go to far,
these roots don't let me walk free
and you've got a hold of my heart
be careful with it please,
