This idea came to me before I left for the cabin. I was sitting in my chair and started imagining walking with different people along a path in the woods and being attacked by a black bear. I was thinking how different people would react differently and different people would expect me to act in different ways. Then I started wondering why I was thinking about bears at all and the concept for the song was created. I wrote the music for this song on the second night up north so I still had the pace of the city in me.
I could beat up the stars, I could yell at the moon, I could scream at the trees, I could rip up some leaves, I could stomp on the grass, I could shoot at the deer, I could fight with the waves but it wouldn't be clear. The wild brought us here, the wild took you away, you were the only one who ever fought for me. I could box with the fire, burn the woods out back, I could kick at the rocks but that won't bring you back. I could hunt down that bear, I could skin him alive, I could hang up his head but that would only remind us that we faced the wild, I tripped and fell, you were the only girl who died fighting like hell. The wild brought us here, the wild took you away, you were the only one who ever died for me.
